TEEAM Technical Visit to TNB’s Diamond-Shaped Transmission Pylon, Penang

Posted on 7th July 2026 07:33 PM | News and Event

TEEAM successfully organised a two-day Technical Visit to TNB’s iconic Diamond-Shaped Transmission Pylon in Penang on 2 to 3 April 2026. The programme provided members with an exceptional opportunity to witness one of Malaysia’s most innovative power transmission projects while strengthening professional networking and collaboration amongst industry stakeholders.

The programme commenced on 2 April 2026 with a delegation from Kuala Lumpur travelling north to Ipoh for a courtesy visit to the Perak Electrical Association (PEA). The visit formed part of TEEAM’s continuous efforts to strengthen relationships and enhance collaboration with fellow State industry associations.

Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by PEA President Mr. Richard Wong and members of the PEA Committee. Also joining the gathering were President of the Persatuan Kekompetenan Penjaga Jentera & Pendawai Elektrik Perak (PKPPE) – The Perak Electrical Chargemen & Wiremen Competency Association – Mr. Tony Wong and members of PKPPE.

The meeting provided an excellent platform for representatives from TEEAM, PEA and PKPPE to exchange views on current industry developments, challenges and emerging opportunities within the electrical and electronics sector. The three Associations also shared updates on their respective activities, initiatives and future plans.

Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation through technical knowledge sharing, professional development programmes, industry engagement and member networking. All parties recognised the importance of fostering close partnerships amongst industry stakeholders in addressing evolving market demands and rapid technological advancements.

Following the meeting, TEEAM hosted a networking lunch at Assam House Restaurant, Ipoh. The informal gathering offered members an excellent opportunity to strengthen friendships, expand professional networks and continue meaningful discussions in a relaxed setting.

After lunch, members of PEA and PKPPE joined the delegation on the journey to Penang, where the group stayed overnight in preparation for the technical visit.

Technical Visit to TNB’s Diamond-Shaped Transmission Pylon

On the morning of 3 April 2026, delegates assembled at the jetty at Pantai Sinaran, Gelugor, for a comprehensive safety briefing conducted by TNB Grid Maintenance North Division. The delegation then travelled by boat to the Diamond-Shaped Transmission Pylon site located alongside the Second Penang Bridge.

Participants received an informative briefing on the planning, design, construction and operational significance of the transmission infrastructure, providing valuable first-hand insights into one of Malaysia’s most remarkable engineering achievements.

The visit centred on TNB’s landmark 275kV double-circuit transmission line project, which spans approximately nine kilometres across the Penang Channel, with deep concrete foundations reaching 80 to 100 meters below the seabed. The distinctive diamond-shaped transmission pylons—the first of their kind in Malaysia—form a key component of the strategic infrastructure developed to strengthen Penang’s electricity supply and support the State’s growing energy demand.

Designed to transmit up to 2,000MW of electricity from the national grid to Penang, the project significantly enhances the reliability, resilience and future capacity of the island’s power transmission network.

Following the technical visit, the delegation proceeded to the Penang Electrical Merchants’ Association (PEMA) located at Malacca Street, Penang for another courtesy visit. The delegation was warmly received by PEMA Honorary Secretary Ir. Darren Lee and members of the PEMA Committee.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for both associations to explore potential areas of future collaboration, including joint technical visits, seminars, industry programmes and other initiatives that would benefit their respective members. The cordial exchange of ideas and experiences reaffirmed the shared commitment of TEEAM and PEMA towards advancing professional standards and promoting the sustainable growth of Malaysia’s electrical and electronics industry.

TEEAM subsequently hosted a networking lunch at Restoran Pen Mutiara, Batu Maung, Penang. PEMA President Mr. Neoh Boon Tong joined the luncheon, which provided another valuable opportunity for fellowship, professional networking and the exchange of industry knowledge.

Appreciation

The successful organisation of the programme was made possible through the dedicated efforts of TEEAM Council Members Ms. Ng Suan Lin, Mr. Louis Loo and Dr. Ir. Is. Prabakaran Rajah, together with Honorary Treasurer Dato’ Andy Tan, whose commitment and meticulous coordination contributed significantly to the smooth execution of the event.

TEEAM also records its sincere appreciation to TNB Grid Maintenance Division, PEA and PEMA for their warm hospitality, generous cooperation and invaluable support throughout the programme. Special thanks are extended to Ir. Ts. Muhammad Ammar Farhan Dzulkifli of TNB Grid Maintenance North Division for his kind assistance in coordinating the technical visit and ensuring a smooth journey.

The enthusiastic participation of all delegates greatly enriched the programme, making it a rewarding and memorable learning experience. Through initiatives such as this, TEEAM remains committed to promoting technical excellence, continuous professional development and stronger industry collaboration for the advancement of Malaysia’s electrical and electronics industry.
